Dr. Tanya Ellis Franklin is an OBGYN and Complex Family Planning Specialist at the University of Louisville (UofL) School of Medicine. For more than 20 years, Dr. Franklin has been an academic physician practicing and teaching the broad spectrum of obstetrics and gynecology care including well woman visits, breast exams, pap tests, contraception, pregnancy care, and menopause care.

Dr. Franklin’s passion for teaching has allowed her to reach thousands of students, residents, and colleagues as an associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Franklin received the University of Louisville Dean’s Outstanding Educator Award for her accomplishments in building a new clinical service and teaching curriculum. She also received the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO)’s Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Franklin invests time with each woman teaching breast self-awareness, the importance of routine breast cancer screening, and self-advocacy. Taking control over your own health means you have control over your own destiny. Advocacy is a cornerstone of patient care and Dr. Franklin incorporates this into every teaching opportunity with her medical students and residents, so they are equipped to advocate and teach patients self-advocacy. As a result, Dr. Franklin was honored with the Fitzbutler Humanism Award for her “patient-centered medical care by modeling the qualities of integrity, excellence, compassion, altruism, respect and empathy.”

Dr. Franklin will continue to work every day to improve breast cancer screening and early detection, educate the next generation of doctors, and advocate for improved health outcomes for women.
