In our continued spotlight on Women in History, we honor Physicist Marie Curie (1867-1934) who famously said, “We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves.” Marie indeed had both! She was a trailblazer for both scientists and women. In her native country of Poland, women were not permitted to attend the university so she attended secret underground classes. She was so passionate about her field that she later relocated to France to earn her doctorate.
Marie’s discovery of the chemical elements Polonium and Radium led to the invention of X-ray technology, forever changing the field of medicine. Without her spirit of innovation, we might not have mammography—a critical tool in the detection of breast cancer. Marie twice earned a Nobel Prize—and was the first woman to win the award—for these groundbreaking achievements.
Just as Marie persevered in her quests for higher education and scientific breakthroughs, researchers today continue to persevere in the quest for new treatments for cancer patients. We are pleased to support breast cancer research efforts at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Moon Shots Program. We believe that perseverance will one day lead to a cure for breast cancer. In the meantime, we’re Helping Women Now through our programs to increase early detection, education and support for women affected by breast cancer. This Women’s History Month, we hope Marie’s words will inspire confidence in your own ability to make a difference too!
