April 9, 2012 – SALT LAKE CITY, UT – These funds will be accepted by Janelle Hail, founder of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), during a check presentation at the Jamba Juice location in Sugarhouse on Tuesday, April 10th at 10am. This is the first year that Jamba Juice stores have conducted the in-store donation program, and is something they plan to continue in Utah in the coming years.
During the month-long “Pink Whirl” charity promotion in October of last year, Jamba Juice store patrons at 18 locations in Utah were encouraged to donate $1 the NBCF when placing their order at the register. As a thank-you for the donation, these guests received a personalized pink Whirl™ to put on display in the lobby and a coupon sheet valued at $10 for use on future visits. The sheet also included breast cancer facts, and a poster on the wall outlined the local impact of the funds, which have been to the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Center, through the NBCF.
“We at Jamba Juice are proud of our commitment to community involvement, and are pleased to see that commitment benefit others through this year’s Pink Whirl breast cancer donation program, “ said Tara Lindstrom of Blended Star, LLC, Utah’s largest franchisee. “It was our goal to work together as a market to raise more than $25,000 for the cause, and our customers came through. We are humbled by the gesture of support and thrilled to present these funds to aid in promoting awareness and the early detection of breast cancer.”
NBCF is a not-for-profit organization committed to saving lives through increasing awareness of breast cancer through education, and by providing mammograms to women in need. Since 2008, the NBCF has funded 442 breast cancer services for underserved women at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Center Institute. “The National Breast Cancer Foundation is grateful and thankful for the support of the Utah Jamba Juice franchisees, and the generosity of its Jamba Juice customers. We are amazed at the size of the gift. There will be women alive this time next year because of these efforts,” said Janelle Hail, NBCF founder. In addition to supporting the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute, NBCF also sponsors awareness programs in Utah through its Early Detection Plan (EDP), an interactive tool to help remind women to detect breast cancer early, and its online social community for breast cancer survivors, www.mynbcf.org. These programs have helped save the lives of countless women in Utah and around the country.
According to the NBCF, more than 200,000 women in America will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year – and one fifth of those will die from the disease. One woman in eight has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, more than 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year; the disease will claim nearly half diagnosed. If detected early (in the localized stage), the five-year survival rate exceeds 98 percent. Mammograms are among the best early-detection methods, yet 13 million American women over the age of 40 have never had a mammogram.
